HumaneAI network expertise backing IRCAI & AWS Compute for Climate Fellowship backed

HumaneAI supported UCL and John Shawe-Taylor as UNESCO Chair in Artificial Intelligence at UCL, in its global outreach programme with research capacity from HumaneAI in a new program run by UNESCO AI center IRCAI and Amazon AWS that selects and fully funds proof of concepts of new ideas leveraging advanced cloud computing and AI to solve some of the biggest challenges in the fight against climate change. The 1st cohort had 75 submissions.

This program selects and fully funds proof of concepts of new ideas leveraging advanced cloud computing and AI to solve some of the biggest challenges in the fight against climate change. It is a new program to fund Climate Tech startups’ R&D projects that need a great deal of cloud computing. Startups at any stage can apply, they just need to have a tech team capable of building with advanced computing services.

EurAI ACAI school part of a larger European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence (ESSAI)

The 3rd TAILOR summer school was co-arranged with ESSAI, the European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence, and ACAI-23, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 24-28 July 2023.

The 3rd TAILOR summer school, ESSAI and ACAI was a week long event, organised by the Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Society (SLAIS), a member society of EurAI, and the University of Ljubljana, the University of Primorska and the Jožef Stefan Institute.

The European Summer School in Artificial Intelligence (ESSAI) is a new annual summer school held under the auspices of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI). The ambition of ESSAI is to become the central meeting place for students and young researchers in Artificial Intelligence to discuss current research and share knowledge.

ESSAI provided an interdisciplinary setting in which courses are offered in all areas of Artificial Intelligence and also from broader scientific, historical, and philosophical perspectives. The format of ESSAI is analogous to the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) which has been running since 1989. Courses will consist of five 90-minute sessions, offered daily (Monday-Friday) in a single week, to allow students to develop in-depth knowledge of a topic.

HHAI23 Doctoral Consortium series of diverse presentations on Human AI interaction and collaboration

During the #HHAI23 Doctoral Consortium, we attended a series of diverse presentations on Human AI interaction and collaboration. This morning Azade Farshad discussed Representation Learning for Semantic Scene Understanding, contributing to advancements in the field of computer vision. #HumanAIInteraction #RepresentationLearning #SemanticSceneUnderstanding.

Johanna Wolff discussed Behavior Support Agents and their role in assisting humans in achieving various goals. The research focuses on creating a framework that enables enhanced interaction between the agent and the user, aiming for greater effectiveness, flexibility, and responsibility. By utilizing techniques from non-monotonic reasoning, the study aims to develop a knowledge base for the agent that aligns with the user’s mental model and can be modified based on user input. The incorporation of explicit and traceable reasoning processes into a logical framework is also a key objective, enabling the agent to provide explanations for its outputs.

Finally, Regina Duarte presented how Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) models are relevant for Human-AI collaboration. She highlighted that current XAI models primarily focus on verifying input-output relationships of AI models, disregarding the importance of context. However, to foster effective collaboration and establish appropriate levels of trust between humans and AI, developing XAI models promoting justified trust is crucial. #ExplainableAI #HumanAICollaboration #Trust

Beyond ChatGPT: Europe Needs to Act Now to Ensure Technological Sovereignty in Next-Generation AI

We co-hosted a half-day event on May 25th at the European Parliament, titled Beyond ChatGPT: How can Europe get in front of the pack on Generative AI Models?, organized by a broad consortium from science and civil society.

The event resulted in a CALL FOR ACTION signed by the speakers in which AI experts “call upon the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the governments of the EU member states to make investments without delay, to protect our technological sovereignty, our shared values, and our future.”

The organizing committee included the HumanE-AI-Net European Network of Centres of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) under the auspices of UNESCO, the Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence in Europe (CLAIRE), and other ICT-48 networks such as TAILOR, AI4Media, and VISION, and language projects like ELG and ELE.

The event was a success and
